Update the NYC Public Data Directory
Progress on This Task
This is the first step of updating the NYC Public Data Directory. The first and last version of this directory was published in 1993, but this outdated copy can still provide a valuable framework for developing a current version.
This task involves documenting each application/database that provides public data.
Citizens everywhere, the New York City Council, and Mayor Bloomberg have all come to recognize the value of open access to city data and there are a variety of initiatives to make more city data available. Unfortunately, there isn't any sort of unified directory or catalog of datasets that are available online or elsewhere. In 1993 such a directory did in fact exist, but it has yet to be updated - so that's where you come in.
In order to update the 1993 directory, we must first digitize it. This will then provide a solid foundation for going through a process to ensure that we have a current and well maintained version. The process of updating this directory can help to bootstrap the various open data initiatives in NYC as well as provide some municipal datasets for America's largest city in the soon to be launched National Data Catalog.
